Buttersworth was born in 1817 in England and immigrated to the United States in the mid-19th century, where he established his career. He was largely self-taught, developing a unique style that combined realism with a romanticized view of maritime life. His works often featured American clipper ships, whaling vessels, and naval battles, capturing the essence of maritime culture during a time of significant naval expansion. Buttersworth's paintings are characterized by their meticulous attention to detail and dynamic compositions, making him a significant figure in American marine art. He passed away in 1894 in the United States.
