Los dos retorcidos robles, iluminados brillantemente por unos pocos rayos de sol, destacan nítidamente contra el cielo amenazante. Van Goyen dibujó los árboles con su pincel. Usó pintura delgada, casi transparente para el follaje y pintura gruesa y granulada para los troncos surcados.
La paleta casi monocromática del paisaje se anima con los jubones azules y rojos de las dos figuras que descansan.
