En su biografía de Roelant Savery, Joachim von Sandrart relata que el emperador Rodolfo II encargó al artista que viajara a Tirol para registrar sus 'notables maravillas de la naturaleza'. Para este gran paisaje montañoso, al igual que en el caso de otros dibujos, Savery se basó en bocetos que realizó durante su viaje por Tirol. Su obra está llena de bosques inhóspitos, acantilados escarpados y cascadas atronadoras.
