À gauche, l'homme avec une canne se penche si près de l'homme avec qui il converse que l'on se demande s'il a un problème d'audition. Les vêtements de toutes les figures suggèrent qu'ils sont des Juifs rassemblés dans une synagogue. Ce que Rembrandt représente ici reste flou.
Peut-être que la figure assise est Judas, rempli de remords pour avoir trahi Jésus.
