Ici, la lumière vient de derrière la vieille femme : l'illumination la plus brillante tombe sur le livre et sa main ridée, modelée avec de la peinture. Son visage reste dans l'ombre. Elle pourrait être la prophétesse Anne, une veuve âgée qui, selon la Bible, servait Dieu par le jeûne et la prière.
La tradition veut que la mère de Rembrandt ait posé pour cette peinture.
