Dans l'estampe adjacente, Rembrandt a fait briller une lumière autour de Joseph. Cependant, l'artiste souhaitait renforcer l'atmosphère nocturne de l'étable. Pour y parvenir, il a ajouté des lignes sur la plaque de cuivre afin d'intensifier l'obscurité de la scène.
Ces estampes modifiées sont appelées états. Ici, l'ombre autour de Joseph a été renforcée, ne laissant que son livre et les visages de Marie et de Jésus doucement illuminés.
