The Arrest of Diponegoro by Lieutenant General De Kock — Histoire et analyse
Le prince Diponegoro était le principal leader de la guerre de Java (1825-1830). Bien qu'il ait reçu la promesse d'une protection, il a été arrêté lors des négociations de paix. Pieneman a peint ce tableau sur commande de De Kock, responsable de cette trahison.
Le tableau ne montre donc pas la trahison réelle, mais plutôt Diponegoro ‘se soumettant’ à l'autorité néerlandaise. Les commandants néerlandais, pleins d'assurance, se tiennent droits sur la véranda. Le drapeau tricolore néerlandais flotte en berne.
