En 1613, le parlement néerlandais (États généraux) a commandé à Otto van Veen de peindre douze tableaux représentant la révolte des Bataves contre les Romains en 69 et 70 après J.-C. Ces œuvres étaient exposées au Binnenhof, le bâtiment central du gouvernement à La Haye. Dans les premières années de la République néerlandaise, beaucoup ont comparé leur propre révolte contre l'Espagne à l'insurrection batave.
