Ici, Rembrandt ne rend que la partie inférieure de la croix, avec des hommes abaissant soigneusement le corps du Christ pour l'enterrer. Ils sont d'une immobilité mortelle. Quelqu'un sous l'échelle les éclaire avec une torche, la seule source de lumière dans la scène.
Tout ce qui est immédiatement autour de la flamme est brillamment éclairé, mais un peu plus loin, les détails disparaissent dans l'obscurité de la nuit.
