L'admiration de Rembrandt pour l'art d'Hercules Segers est bien connue. Ici, cela se manifeste de manière très inhabituelle. Pour ce vol en Égypte, Rembrandt a utilisé une plaque de cuivre de Segers représentant Tobias et l'Ange.
Il a effacé les figures originales de la plaque, les remplaçant par la Sainte Famille. Il a laissé le paysage largement intact.
