Étienne a été nommé diacre (serviteur spirituel) par les apôtres. Il a prêché et accompli des miracles, et est considéré comme le premier martyr chrétien. Il a été lapidé à mort pour avoir accusé les grands prêtres de meurtre du Messie.
Malgré le petit format de l'impression, Rembrandt réussit à suggérer la brutalité du drame. Assiégé par diverses personnes lançant des pierres, Étienne a presque succombé à la violence.
