Rembrandt allestisce la scena con una moltitudine di figure, ognuna delle quali risponde individualmente agli eventi sul palco. Pilato, con il lungo bastone, punta verso Cristo e lascia alla folla la scelta di liberare o 'il Re dei Giudei' o il assassino Barabba. L'esito è noto.
Rembrandt ha creato questa enorme scena interamente in acquaforte, graffiando direttamente nella lastra di rame.
