La meticulosidad con la que se representa el viejo y maltrecho cráneo, con un enredo de rasguños, sugiere que Segers estaba trabajando aquí ‘del natural’. El cráneo que sirvió de modelo es diferente al de la pintura adyacente (Colección privada de la familia Welch, Estados Unidos).
