En esta obra maestra, Rembrandt ofrece una interpretación única de un capítulo de la Biblia al agrupar a todas las figuras, ricas y pobres, jóvenes y viejos, sanos y enfermos, alrededor de Jesús. En la ejecución técnica, logró matices en tonos de gris nunca antes vistos, que van desde el negro aterciopelado, pasando por el gris, hasta casi el blanco. Y, a los pies de Jesús, se encuentra la mujer reclinada de uno de sus dibujos preparatorios.
