A su muerte en 1897, Rudolph Guicherit ya no era fotógrafo, sino superintendente del Rijksmuseum. Si hubiera vivido un poco más, también podría haber hecho sus rondas en esta galería. Sin embargo, el ala Philips solo se construyó en 1909.
En 1866, Guicherit tomó cuatro fotografías del Canal del Mar del Norte, que servía como una conexión más corta y mejor entre el puerto de Ámsterdam y el Mar del Norte.
