Rembrandt manipuló la luz de una manera muy personal. Aquí, el turbante del hombre y el lado derecho de su rostro están brillantemente iluminados, mientras que el lado izquierdo está en sombra. Estas cabezas de personajes – que no son retratos – fueron extremadamente populares en el siglo XVII; al principio, fueron ampliamente copiadas e imitadas.
Se conocían como 'tronies turcas'.
