Ephraim Bueno (1599–1665), un médico, poeta y traductor judío de Portugal, probablemente pertenecía al círculo de amigos de Rembrandt. Rembrandt pintó su retrato como un estudio preparatorio para una impresión. Se concentró en la cara y la división de luz y sombra; el resto era menos importante para los propósitos de este boceto.
Esto explica las pinceladas bastante gruesas para la ropa y las manos.
