De los nobles que se rebelaron contra el dominio español de Felipe II en los Países Bajos, Guillermo de Orange se convirtió en el gran líder de la revuelta holandesa. Defendió sus propios intereses, luchó por una mayor independencia y abogó por la libertad de religión. En 1580, Felipe II puso precio a su cabeza, y fue asesinado cuatro años después.
