Rembrandt rara vez dibujó autorretratos. En este dibujo – considerado durante mucho tiempo como un estudio preliminar para la impresión cercana – registró lo que realmente vio en el espejo: un rostro algo áspero. En la aguafuerte, añadió un elegante rizo de cabello, un 'lovelock', detrás de su hombro, un peinado muy popular entre los dandi aristocráticos.
