Coleccionar conchas exóticas era un pasatiempo popular en el siglo XVII, y también despertó el interés de Rembrandt. Tenía una pequeña colección de historia natural, que incluía esta concha en forma de cono veteado; es similar en forma al conus cervus, un cono ‘ciervo’. Representó la forma y las marcas de la concha con meticuloso cuidado en la plancha de cobre.
