Une guerre civile entre les Orangistes et les Patriotes a fait rage dans la République néerlandaise entre 1786 et 1787. En mai 1787, l'armée du Stathouder a tenté de couper la ville d'Utrecht, qui était aux mains des Patriotes, de la province voisine de Hollande, également contrôlée par les Patriotes. Les Patriotes ont réussi à repousser l'attaque le 9 mai.
