Una guerra civile tra Orangisti e Patrioti infuriò nella Repubblica Olandese durante il 1786 e il 1787. Nel maggio del 1787, l'esercito del Stadtholder cercò di isolare la città di Utrecht, che era nelle mani dei Patrioti, dalla vicina provincia di Olanda, anch'essa controllata dai Patrioti. I Patrioti riuscirono a respingere l'attacco il 9 maggio.
