Dans sa biographie de Roelant Savery, Joachim von Sandrart raconte que l'empereur Rodolphe II a commandé à l'artiste de se rendre en Tyrol pour enregistrer ses « merveilles remarquables de la nature ». Pour ce grand paysage de montagne, comme dans le cas d'autres dessins, Savery s'est appuyé sur des croquis qu'il a réalisés lors de ses voyages en Tyrol. Son œuvre regorge de forêts inhospitalières, de falaises abruptes et de chutes d'eau tonitruantes.
