Pourtant, la manière dont la figure de la Vierge allaitant l'Enfant remplit le premier plan entraîne les spectateurs à partager ce moment profondément intime, comme si nous étions dans la pièce. Joseph, en revanche, continue de lire, imperturbable, à l'arrière-plan.
Il apparaît souvent de cette manière dans les gravures italiennes du XVIe siècle, qui ont peut-être inspiré Rembrandt.
