Rembrandt ambienta la scena in un interno piuttosto indefinito. Eppure, il modo in cui la figura della Vergine che allatta il Bambino riempie il primo piano coinvolge gli spettatori in questo momento profondamente intimo, come se fossimo nella stanza. Giuseppe, al contrario, continua a leggere imperterrito sullo sfondo.
Spesso appare in questo modo nelle stampe italiane del XVI secolo, che potrebbero aver ispirato Rembrandt.
