La plus grande et la plus célèbre toile de Rembrandt a été réalisée pour la salle de guilde des Arquebusiers. C'était l'une des plusieurs salles de la garde civique d'Amsterdam, la milice et la police de la ville. Rembrandt a été le premier à peindre des figures dans un portrait de groupe en train de faire quelque chose.
Le capitaine, vêtu de noir, dit à son lieutenant de commencer la marche de la compagnie. Les gardes s'alignent. Rembrandt a utilisé la lumière pour se concentrer sur des détails particuliers, comme la main gesticulante du capitaine et la jeune fille en arrière-plan.
Elle était la mascotte de la compagnie.
