Le Christ est suspendu à la croix entre deux voleurs, entouré d'apôtres, de sa mère, de disciples et de soldats. Rembrandt a exécuté la scène entièrement en pointe sèche, ce qui n'avait (presque) jamais été fait auparavant. Cette technique consiste à graver directement sur une plaque de cuivre avec une aiguille à gravure, ce qui confère aux lignes une qualité floue et veloutée.
De plus, cette immense estampe est imprimée avec un ton de surface léger.
