Quando una città è circondata dai nemici, la sua gente si trova in una situazione disperata. Il cibo scarseggia e le malattie possono facilmente scoppiare. Motivi sufficienti perché Leiden quasi si arrendesse nel 1574.
Ma la città viene liberata dall'esercito ribelle, il soccorso arriva in tempo utile. Frotte di persone affamate ed esauste attendono i loro liberatori. I soldati hanno portato con sé cibo, principalmente aringhe e pane bianco.
