Quando si graffia una linea in una lastra di incisione, si produce un piccolo bordo rialzato chiamato 'burr'. Il burr, che conferisce alle linee di acquaforte un aspetto vellutato e sontuoso, si consuma rapidamente. Di conseguenza, l'effetto decorativo della tecnica diminuisce e la rappresentazione diventa sempre più leggera.
Qui Rembrandt ha risolto quel problema rendendo nuovamente più scure le aree d'ombra con linee extra, ad esempio sotto il cane in primo piano.
