Cristo pende dalla croce tra due ladroni, circondato da apostoli, sua madre, discepoli e soldati. Rembrandt ha eseguito la scena interamente in punta secca, cosa che non era (quasi) mai stata fatta prima. Questa tecnica prevede di graffiare direttamente su una lastra di rame con un ago da incisione, il che conferisce alle linee una qualità sfumata e vellutata.
Questa enorme stampa è, inoltre, stampata con un tono di superficie chiaro.
