La figura in piedi a sinistra è un mercante della Compagnia Olandese delle Indie Orientali (VOC), probabilmente Jakob Martensen, accanto a sua moglie. Dietro di loro c'è un uomo schiavizzato che tiene un parasole, un pajong, sopra le loro teste. Questo era un simbolo di status nella cultura giavanese.
Il Castello di Batavia è visibile sullo sfondo. A destra, la flotta della Compagnia è ancorata, pronta a tornare nei Paesi Bassi. Il mercante indica le navi con il suo bastone, segnalando il suo coinvolgimento.
