La figure à gauche est un marchand de la Compagnie néerlandaise des Indes orientales (VOC), probablement Jakob Martensen, à côté de sa femme. Derrière eux se trouve un homme asservi tenant un parasol, un pajong, au-dessus de leurs têtes. Cela était un symbole de statut dans la culture javanaise.
