Para Rembrandt, 1656 foi um ano turbulento, pois ele entrou com um pedido de falência e seus bens foram leiloados para pagar os credores. Apesar disso, Rembrandt continuou a trabalhar e seus contratempos pessoais não se refletem nesta gravura: o encontro entre Abraão, Deus e os anjos parece despreocupado. As gravuras de Rembrandt já eram itens de colecionador populares em sua época.
