Depois que Rembrandt pintou um autorretrato altamente incomum com seu rosto na sombra por volta de 1628 (em outro lugar nesta galeria), ele experimentou a mesma abordagem em suas gravuras. Isso provou ser uma tarefa difícil. Inicialmente, os detalhes na sombra mal podiam ser reconhecidos.
Ele teve sucesso apenas com uma nova tentativa em 1633 (no meio).
