Rembrandt era fascinado pelos efeitos da luz. Isso também é claro em suas gravuras, por exemplo, nestes diminutos autorretratos em que seu rosto está em grande parte meio envolto em sombra. Na versão com o chapéu de pele, podemos ver que esta cobertura de cabeça foi adicionada apenas em um estágio posterior.
Ele começou a gravura com a cabeça descoberta: seu cabelo ainda é visível através do chapéu.
