Na época de Rembrandt, os pavões eram consumidos pelos abastados: a carne era incorporada em tortas de carne, entre outros pratos. Imediatamente após serem mortos, as aves eram penduradas para sangrar, como Rembrandt nos mostra neste armazém. Ele estava, sem dúvida, cativado pelos esplêndidos padrões das penas, pela explosão de cores: azul, verde e ocre amarelo.
