Inicialmente, Rembrandt ficou fascinado, acima de tudo, pelos patéticos miseráveis obrigados a mendigar. Mais tarde, ele também desenvolveu um interesse por outros coloridos habitantes da cidade, que geralmente retratava no mesmo formato minúsculo. Nessas seis gravuras, ele retratou um charlatão em roupas antiquadas, dois soldados poloneses, dois músicos de rua (um tocador de órgão e um violinista) e um patinador.
