Por volta de 1654, Rembrandt retratou quatro eventos na vida de Cristo no mesmo formato, prestando especial atenção à luz. Nesta primeira gravura da série, o idoso Simeão é mostrado segurando o recém-nascido Jesus no Templo. Ele percebe que o bebê é o Salvador tão aguardado.
Rembrandt deixou uma fina camada de tinta na gravura (tom de superfície), fazendo com que a cena emergisse de uma misteriosa semi-escuridão.
