皮特·海因年轻时成为了一名水手。当他十五岁时，他被西班牙人俘获，并被迫作为划船奴隶服役两年。在获释后，海因追求商船事业：他在荷兰西印度公司担任高层职位。1628年，他在古巴海岸捕获了一支西班牙的宝藏舰队（被称为“银舰队”）。一年后，他在海上遇难。
