El tema de esta pintura es un misterio: ¿es una exhortación a alabar a Dios a través del canto y la música de cuerdas, o una escena de seducción con la anciana como proxeneta? En cualquier caso, en esta obra temprana, Rembrandt utilizó elementos de su propio entorno: su madre posó como modelo para la anciana, y se pueden reconocer los rasgos de Rembrandt en el joven.
