Para evitar ser asesinado y que su esposa fuera capturada por el rey Abimelec, Isaac ocultó su amor por Rebeca pretendiendo que eran hermanos. Sin embargo, su intimidad los traicionó cuando pensaron que no estaban siendo espiados. Rembrandt los representa en un momento tierno.
Además, trabaja con una libertad excepcional, aplica la pintura de manera gruesa y raspa sobre ella con el extremo de su pincel.
