Cuando esta pintura salió a subasta en 1824, se presentó como un autorretrato de Adriaen van de Velde con su familia. Este mito persistió a lo largo de todo el siglo XIX, y en parte por esto se convirtió en una de las atracciones más admiradas de Ámsterdam. Cuando quedó claro que no era un autorretrato, el interés por la pintura disminuyó notablemente.
