Al representar a Francisco, Rembrandt no eligió el momento tradicional en que el santo recibe los ‘estigmas’, las heridas de Cristo, sino que representó al santo orando justo antes de este extraordinario evento. Esta es una prueba de impresión inacabada realizada en punta seca. Solo se conocen cinco impresiones de este estado, todas en tipos de papel oriental inusuales o costoso pergamino.
