Vestido con un albornoz japonés bordado, Bol posa aquí como un hombre del mundo. Probablemente pintó este autorretrato con motivo de su matrimonio con la rica viuda Anna van Erckel, una de sus primeras mecenas. El marco dorado y ornamentado fue hecho especialmente para la pintura.

Sus grandes girasoles tallados simbolizan el matrimonio: siguen al sol, así como una persona sigue a su ser querido.
