Se dice que el prometedor pintor Wouter van Troostwijk murió joven a causa de un resfriado que contrajo mientras dibujaba afuera por la noche. ¡La vida de un artista difícilmente podría terminar de manera más romántica! Su taller se representa en este autorretrato informal, que realizó poco antes de su muerte. Agrupados en la parte superior del armario hay moldes de yeso de esculturas clásicas, los modelos que tradicionalmente utiliza un pintor.
