Rembrandt estaba fascinado por los efectos de la luz. Esto también es evidente en sus grabados, por ejemplo, en estos diminutos autorretratos en los que su rostro está mayormente a medio cubierto por la sombra. En la versión con un gorro de piel, podemos ver que esta cobertura de cabeza se añadió solo en una etapa posterior.
Comenzó el grabado con la cabeza descubierta: su cabello aún es visible a través del gorro.
