The Threatened Swan — Historia y Análisis
Un cisne defiende ferozmente su nido contra un perro. En siglos posteriores, esta pelea fue interpretada como una alegoría política: se pensaba que el cisne blanco simbolizaba al estadista holandés Johan de Witt (asesinado en 1672) protegiendo al país de sus enemigos. Este fue el significado que se le atribuyó a la pintura cuando se convirtió en la primera adquisición en entrar en la Nationale Kunstgalerij (el precursor del Rijksmuseum) en 1800.
