The Threatened Swan — História e Análise
Um cisne defende ferozmente seu ninho contra um cachorro. Nos séculos seguintes, essa luta foi interpretada como uma alegoria política: acreditava-se que o cisne branco simbolizava o estadista holandês Johan de Witt (assassinado em 1672) protegendo o país de seus inimigos. Esse foi o significado atribuído à pintura quando se tornou a primeira aquisição a entrar na Nationale Kunstgalerij (o precursor do Rijksmuseum) em 1800.
