Rembrandt no solo realizó grabados, sino que también los coleccionó a gran escala. Su colección incluía muchas obras de maestros holandeses, franceses, alemanes e italianos. Con esta Virgen en las nubes, responde a una famosa aguafuerte del artista italiano Federico Barocci, que debió haber poseído.
