Rembrandt não apenas fez gravuras, mas também as colecionou em grande escala. Sua coleção incluía muitas obras de mestres holandeses, franceses, alemães e italianos. Com esta Virgem nas nuvens, ele responde a uma famosa gravura do artista italiano Federico Barocci, da qual deve ter possuído um exemplar.
